The Mutual Union of Tiv in America, Inc. (MUTA) was organized in July 1993 in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the United States of America. The first convention was called by the Tiv Community in Grand Rapids, MI following several months of discussions with several leading Tiv professionals in cities across the United States on how to bring together all the Tiv families in America for a big family reunion. The convention of July 16th to 18th  marked the beginning of MUTA. Since then, MUTA has held conventions in Atlanta, GA (1994), Baltimore, MD (1995), Piscataway, NJ (1996), Hattiesburg, MS (1997), Xenia, OH (1998), Oakland, CA (1999), St. Cloud, MN (2000). The membership has more than doubled, family ties have grown stronger, and conventions have become an annual Tiv reunion. The next convention in 2001 is scheduled to hold in Atlanta, GA.

In 1999 the organization was reorganized and incorporated as a Michigan non-profit corporation and has received the IRS tax-exempt status under the section 501(c)(3) code.

MUTA has been incorporated as a non-profit organization in the state of Michigan, U.S. The purpose of the organization is to generate enough resources to promote Tiv culture in North America and provide non-sectarian welfare support to the global Tiv communities in education, healthcare, agriculture, and disaster relief.
